About five weeks after writing the new goal I had to fly from New York to Chicago on business. As I took my seat on the plane the passenger seated next to me said, “Good morning.” When I replied he heard from my accent that I wasn’t an American. He actually asked, as so often happens when Americans hear a British accent, if I was Australian. Having got me talking, he went on to ask my name and what I did for a living. When I told him that I was in charge of teaching sales techniques to a large multinational he became very interested. “We need to get better at selling in my business,” he said, “I’m senior partner in a Chicago law firm ... how would you feel about running a sales training workshop for us?” I told him I was a full-time employee and couldn’t really give up the time. “What about over a weekend?” he said, “We’ll fly you out to Chicago on a Friday night and back on a Sunday evening! All expenses paid on top of that. So what would your training fee be?” “Five thousand dollars,” I replied. “Done!” he said shaking my hand. Three weeks later I ran the weekend workshop!
